Best E-Readers for Library Books: Borrowing on Kobo, Kindle and PocketBook

If you borrow from a library, this single question decides your e-reader. Not screen size, not battery, not price. Get it wrong and you will spend the next five years sideloading files through a laptop.

The short version: Kobo has library borrowing built into the device. Kindle does not, outside the United States.

Best for libraries

If you borrow, buy Kobo

Why Kobo wins this, plainly

Kobo devices have OverDrive integrated at the operating-system level. You search your library from the e-reader, borrow, and the book downloads. No computer, no cable, no third app.

Kindle routes library loans through Amazon. In the US that works, if clunkily — Libby hands you off to Amazon, you confirm, it syncs. Outside the US that path largely does not exist, and you are left downloading an ACSM file, opening Adobe Digital Editions on a computer, and copying the book across by USB. People do it. Nobody enjoys it.

What about PocketBook?

PocketBook supports open EPUB and Adobe DRM directly, which is how most non-US library systems actually lend. It is a genuinely good option in Europe and rarely mentioned in English-language guides.

Borrowing outside the United States

OverDrive and Libby coverage varies enormously by country. UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are well served. Much of continental Europe lends through Adobe DRM instead, which favours Kobo and PocketBook and effectively rules Kindle out.

If you are in German-speaking Europe, see our Tolino guide — Tolino integrates with German library lending in ways nothing else does.

Can I borrow library books on a Kindle at all?

In the US, yes, through Libby. Elsewhere, technically yes via sideloading, practically no for most people. If you borrow regularly and live outside the US, buying a Kindle is the wrong decision and we would rather say so than sell you one.

Compare the full range in our best e-readers guide, or take the one-minute quiz — library borrowing is one of the questions it weighs most heavily. Also see our Kobo and Kindle pages.
